Transforming energy

Transforming energy

As we come to the end of the Oil Age, there is a general acceptance that the next era of human existence will have to be powered by renewable energy sources. This level-headed, non-cranky analysis examines how the three key alternative energy sources - solar, wind and biomass - are being developed for everyday applications and how they point the way towards genuine energy sustainability for future generations.

The film features:

·          A property developer who builds housing estates where you buy a package consisting of a fuel-efficient home, an electric car that plugs into the garage at night and a share in the estate's renewable energy power plant.

·          A commercial company that manufactures some of the world's biggest wind turbines.

·          A builder who builds super-efficient houses that cost less than a dollar a day to heat.

·          Activists campaigning for a more level playing field between traditional and renewable energy sources.

·          A leading biomass scientist who demystifies the production of ethanol-based fuel for vehicles.

·          A remote family home in Iowa powered solely by solar and wind.

·          A number of leading global commentators giving their perspectives on the macro issues.

The film serves as a reminder that alternative energy has moved beyond the sphere of the crank and into the lives of everyday families and commercial businesses.

"There is little doubt that we can create a sustainable world with the use of even our current technology. Whether we will or not will depend on the commitment, the passion, the spirit of so many different kinds of people whose life energy can transform, even save, our world."

Here comes the sun
We now know how to harness the sun’s energy. A piece of desert the size of France could fulfil the whole planet’s energy needs. This documentary examines in detail the progress that is being made towards converting our Oil Society into a Helio Society - you may be surprised by the progress that has been made already. Solar stocks are soaring, the desert is the new Promised Land and roofs are entering the energy marketplace. It is even possible to fuel your care with algae from your garden!
Waste is food
With the industrialisation of countries such China and India, the amount of waste we produce is spiralling out of control. But hope exists. German chemist Michael Braungart and American designer-architect William McDonough are fundamentally changing the way we produce and build. If our waste can become food for the biosphere or the technosphere, then production and consumption could actually become beneficial for the planet. Their Cradle to Cradle concept proposes that every product be designed in such a way that at the end of its lifecycle its component materials become new resources.
