| Finland was poorly treated after World War Two. It’s a scandal that this story is not known more widely. The Finnish people fought bravely throughout World War Two to resist invasion by the Soviet Union. In the face of overwhelming odds, they successfully retained their independence. Yet after the war they were forced to pay reparations to the Soviet Union as punishment for having resisted invasion. Finland’s battle to retain its independence is rarely mentioned these days. Yet it is one of the most interesting political stories of the war, especially given the emergence of the post-war Soviet bloc, which Finland’s efforts enabled it to avoid being swallowed up by.
