| Extinction: As our planet’s more sensitive natural environments deteriorate, the creatures adapted to live in them decline and sometimes even face extinction. Some biologists believe that half of the world’s species could be gone in 100 years. Mountain: More than half of the world’s population depends on the meltwaters from mountain ranges. While some mountains are formed by volcanic action, mountain ranges result from the movement of tectonic plates. This programme visits various mountainous regions, including the Himalayas. Space: Across the void of space, the other planets in our solar system all have environments that are hostile to life as we know it. Our nearest neighbour, Venus, has been visited by probes to gather information about its surface – as has Mars – but humans have yet to discover ways to send astronauts to these planets, as the journeys themselves would be just as dangerous as the final destination.
