Stonehenge

Stonehenge
This DVD is a well-made analysis of the purpose, construction and age of Stonehenge. It explores the connection between Europe’s many “henges” as historians and archaeologists discuss their possible functions.

Viewers learn conflicting theories about the “slaughter stone” and are encouraged to decide for themselves whether Stonehenge was a site of human sacrifice. Experts examine the facts that place the erection of Stonehenge in the Bronze Age and explain how the monument was built in stages over centuries. Leading scholars debate what purpose Stonehenge served. Was it a religious calendar, a burial ground or an astrological tracking system?

The DVD includes a well-made experiment to replicate the construction of several full-size standing stones using only the labour and tools that existed at the time of Stonehenge’s construction.
